How Near Is a Match to me?
We carry the DNA of our ancestors going back at least 10 generations of 512 female and 512 male grandparents allowing us to have some DNA from about the year of 1769. That covers 1,024 grandparent ancestors and a lot more from them. We have in each cell a total of 3400 certiMorgans worth of DNA.
We find these amount of centiMorgans sitting on 23 chromosomes nice and neat coming to us in segments as small as 1cM to as large as imaginable.

Bubby, Dad and me, 3 generations Lithuania-USA side-Jermulowske/Goldfoot |
1 generation ago we had 2 ancestors, a mother and a father. 50% of our DNA comes from each parent. Our parents were born about 25 years ago from us. Being I was born in 1934, I know when they were born; F-1908, M-1913. We get 50% of our DNA from each parent. I had Mildred Robinson and Maurice Goldfoot as parents. My son and daughter shares 3384cMs each with me. The longest segment each has is 267cMs and each has the same segment on chromosome 23. My brother shares 2537cMs with me. Our longest segment is 189cMs long and we also match on the X chromosome.
2 generations ago we had 4 grandparents 2 f and 2 m. We now have 25% per grandparent. This goes back about 50 years ago. Since I have a tree, I know. I can add 1871, 1886 for m side, and 1870 for f side. That's like 50 years ago. I had Augusta Gustafson and Frank Robinson, and Zlata Jermulowske and Nathan Abraham Goldfus/Goldfoot. WE WOULD HAVE 1700cMs from a match at this level. Grandparents/grandchild, aunt or uncle/niece or nephew, half siblings Nephew in 1400cMs
3. generations ago we had 8 ancestors; 4 f and 4 m; 12.5% per ggrandparent going back 75 years ago. I had Gustaf Johansson, Elizebet Ersdotter and Julia Ann Tuller, Abiathar Smith Robinson and Joshua Jermulowske, Esther Unknown and Movsha Goldfus, Bella Unknown. WE WOULD HAVE 850.0cMs at this level. 1st cousins, ggrandparents/great grandchild, great uncle or great aunt or great nephew or niece, half uncle or aunt, half nephew or niece My 1st cousin matches are from 952cMs to 822cMs.
4 generations ago we had 16 ancestors; 8 f and 8 m; 6.25% per gggrandparent about 100 years ago. WE WOULD HAVE 425cMs at this level. 1st cousins once removed, half 1st cousin, My 1st cousins once removed are from 682cMs to 473cMs.
5 generations ago we had 32 ancestors, 16 f and 16 m with 3.125% DNA per ggggrandparent about 125 years ago. WE WOULD HAVE 212.50cMs at this level.
2nd cousins, 1st cousins twice removed,
6 generations ago we had 64 ancestors, 32 f and 32 m with 1.5625% per gggggrandparent 150 years ago. we would have 106.25cMs at this level. 2nd cousins once removed, half 2nd cousins, 1st cousins 3 X removed half 1st cousin twice removed.. I have 143cMs with a 3rd cousin once removed (FTDNA). 26cMs is our longest segment. We have an X match
7 generations ago we had 128 ancestors, 64 f and 64 m with 0.78125% per ggggggrandparents about 175 years ago. WE WOULD HAVE 53.13cMs at this level. 3rd cousins, 2nd cousin twice removed
On Genesis the smallest amount I have shared with L. is 34.4cMs total with 4.4 generations away. 14.1cMs was the longest segment shared. This would be 0.5058% per each grandparent. (divide 34.4 by 68 for % inherited).
8. generations ago we had 256 ancestors, 128 f and 128 m, 0.390625% per ggggggggrandparent about 225 years ago. WE WOULD HAVE 26.56cMs at this level. 3rd cousins once removed.
9 generations ago we had 512 ancestors, 256 f and 256 m, 0.1953125% per ggggggggrandparent about 225 years ago. WE WOULD HAVE 13.28cMs at this level. 4th cousins, 3rd cousins twice removed.
10 generations ago we have 1,024 ancestors; 512 f and 512 m with 0.0976625% per gggggggggrandparent about 250 years ago. WE WOULD HAVE 6.64cMs at this level. This covers 4th cousins once removed; 3rd cousins 3 X removed. 4th cousins once removed, 3rd cousins 3X removed.
11 generations ago we have ggggggggggrandparents about 275 years ago. WE WOULD HAVE 3.32cMs at this level. This covers 5th cousins. 5th cousins.
Chromosome #1 has the most known genes totaling 2,968 and the 23rd or Y or X chromosome has the fewest with only 231.
